Information Technology in construction sector

In recent years, new terminology ICT stand for Information and Communication Technology introduced, which is rapidly used in number of advanced sectors to increase efficiency and productivity in limited time span, assist in the management of business processes and working environments in many countries. The evidence has indicated that ICT has potential to empower the quality of lives for people living in country. It provides power to access virtually all kinds of information, knowledge, as well as communications services. It is used as a tool to achieve better learning outcomes and enable access to material and resources from international, national and local sources in remote sites.

Information and Communication Technology plays a key role in development of construction sector and recognized as a crucial element in the infrastructures. In many developing countries, ICT is used to reshape, reorganize and fundamentally restructure working methods in the sectors in which they are used. They give numerous advantages of efficiency, fast communication, information gathering and sharing in each sector.

It is rightly to say that adopting ICT would be useful in monitoring and handling of the stress and strain development process. The new technology is helps in adopting modern methods of construction, and communication etc. It enable us to manage more complex building projects better and more comprehensively than earlier and also more complex architectural expression used in contemporary construction. Building product modeling or building information modeling has been used as a suitable method to increase ability of manages design, examine overall building quality, and all construction issues within current building project. Using a combination of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), smart sensors and wireless networks help in sight safety, track operations and equipment, notify management and employees of pending danger and ultimately contribute to reducing accident rates. The system also provides reports on dangerous occurrences that have happened, in order to enabling managers to learn from experiences acquired, or mistakes they did during the construction of a project.

During the 1990’s the international construction industry started using technology. The use of e-mail became usual and websites were established for marketing purposes and then for communication. Intranets and extranets were established to facilitate communication within companies and throughout their branches.

Information and Communication Technology play Vitol role in development of any sector. Positive effects of ICT in developed countries, it become critically important to use these technologies significantly.  The United Nations Development Program (2001: section 2.1.1) refers to ICTs as a “powerful enabler of development” because of the significant impact on the economic, scientific, academic, social, political, cultural and other aspects of life.
